EMERGE // Roots & Evolution

- EMERGE // Roots & Evolution

ERMERGE // Advanced Training Part 3

ROOTS & EVOLUTION accompanies a cycle of creative action based on self-awareness. // ROOTS wants to strengthen the roots we need in and for creative processes through somatic methods. Experiential anatomy based on Body-Mind Centering opens a space into a rich, finely differentiated world of the body - from the perception of microscopic movements like those of the cell to large movements of the bones. Improvisational structures are developed from this process of discovery and accompanied with somatic-based dance technique. Regular Authentic Movement practice supports one's artistic research process through its connection to the direct experience of the moment from non-knowledge. This allows the complexity and dimensionality to remain tethered in the artistic researcher and to the subject.

// EVOLUTION describes the process of introducing artistic projects, allowing them to emerge and its development of artistic material. The material comes into a dialogue with somatic-connected aesthetic decision criteria, through which the personal material is sharpened for the performance. Abstraction and performativity become possible without loss of inner connection. Embodiment can occur. In this process, self-reference and self-empowering action are strengthened. Specific work and group processes allow uncertainties, ambiguities and questions to be uncovered in a way that is productive for the artistic process. Group feedback processes, especially according to Liz Lerman's Critical Response, catalyze the questioning, selection and elaboration of the artistic material

choreographer, dancer, researcher

Hailing from Southern California, Andrew Wass is a choreographer, dancer, and researcher. His interests lie at the crossroads of philosophy, cognitive science, and improvised dance. Looking to dissolve the boundaries between academic research and performance, he juxtaposes corporeal and cognitive practices to discover their theoretical commonalities. These commonalities then reveal more potential in his teaching and performance practice. A member of Lower Left and a graduate of the SoDA program at the HZT in Berlin, Wass is pursuing a PhD in Dance at Texas Woman’s University.
